Air Tightness Testing

Have you ever wondered about ventilation in irish houses? About those strange grids on the wall in the sitting room.. have you ever pondered their purpose? Perhaps they are there to provide fresh air for the open fire… or to stop our ears popping when the kitchen extractor is switched on?

Well wonder no more!  We can confirm that they serve no useful purpose at all.  They are merely a hole in your house – slightly smaller than the hole in your house that the open fireplace represents – and through these apertures comes unbidden either too much or too little ventilation.  In addition to these vents most homes in Ireland also have an fascinating collection of openings and draughts which, depending on the wind direction and intensity, also contribute to the uncontrolled nature of domestic irish ventilation.

The correct approach is a system which seals up your house to the correct level of permeability and then using a proprietary ventilation system which delivers the correct amount of fresh air every day without imposing a severe financial penalty in increased heating.

To remove any doubt about the amount of permeability, we offer air tightness testing – conducted to the appropriate standard utilising the most accurate instrumentation.  When conducted in conjunction with thermal imaging this will give an accurate picture of all the sources of uncontrolled air ingress in a home.  This allows the targeting and remediation of these faults and can result in significant improvements in overall building efficiency.

When draught and uncontrolled ventilation removal are combined with the installation of controlled heat recovery ventilation HRV then the transformation is dramatic.  A fresh moisture controlled environment is maintained without the energy or comfort sacrifice that comes from opening windows or relying on the passive vents and draughts.
