Open Fires
According to Lakshman Guruswami more than one fifth of the world population (thats 2 billion people) are stuck in a time warp which leaves them dependent on open fires for heating and cooking. Moves are afoot to roll out the provision of stoves to these third world countries with the highest dependance on open fires.
The benefits are tremendous with human health, global warming, resource management etc all being impacted by the fundamental inefficiency at the heart of the open fire.
In Ireland many people are reluctant to countenance the relinquishment of their cherished heat source for aesthetic or reasons of cultural attachment. But the rationale for change is increasingly compelling and the excuses completely inadequate.
Time to move on, to exit the time warp, to install a combustion device with a target efficiency of 80% or higher – thermal redemption is available by contacting Ensen and starting a dialogue about a new stove, boiler or heat pump. SEAI (formerly SEI) may even contribute some of the money the government took from you over the winter in carbon tax – in the form of a warmer or greener homes grant.
