Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency has evolved, it used to involve someone asking at the top of their voice who left the immersion on.  A refrain popular in the 70′s and 80′s and the cause of much strife now has a simple solution – Solar water heating.  But seriously, the issue of energy efficiency has local and global consequences, and these consequences are beginning to bite.

The smart answer is to start a process of increasing our energy efficiency, something which will have an immediate and positive benefit.  If you doubt the importance of this essential exercise then this – World governments have fully accepted that global warming will occur – the only discussions that are taking place are by how much.  Everyone thinks that this process will result in a solution but anyone who monitors the situation will see that the net effect to date of the efforts has been the generation of an aspiration.

The aspiration is currently “to maintain the rise in temperature to less than 2 degrees” – which is a seemingly benign – almost irrelevant increase.  The reality is that no government has the first clue how this is likely to be achieved, or what the full consequences are.  And no real connection exists between the measures being taken and this aspiration – the measures currently are a vague attempt to set a date by which time the emissions will stop increasing – not the temperature.

There are still a few people who of course do not believe in global warming – but their argument has long been skewered by the precautionary principle – if you do not know the effect of increasing global CO2 levels then don’t increase global CO2 levels.  Anyway back to the aspiration to a maximum temperature rise of 2 degrees, and the fact that there is a disconnect between the aspiration and the actions underway – it seems like the scientists are actually planning on a 4 degree temperature rise – because they can clearly see that inactions speak louder than waffle.
