Global warming
The basic concept is similar to a greenhouse – you have a screen which allows radiation energy in the form of sunlight in but prevents Infra-Red radiation from leaving. Ideal for growing tomatoes but a bit of a problem when it is a planetary phenomenon. The gases responsible are mainly Methane and CO2 and these are primarily being emitted in increasing quantities as a result of human activity.
The prognosis if we fail to slow the increase and then reverse the trend is not that good – most of the changes made to date have been essentially educational or experimental. The real changes will come when we move to the panic phase and start implementing tax measures and regulation to control emissions. At that point the early adopters will have some cause to feel smug.
